“Ode to Femininity”
collage, acrylic, oil on canvas
36 x 36 x 1.5″
2016, by Vanessa Compton
Created right after returning from my first month long artist-in-residence at Hubbell Trading Post National Historic Site in Ganado, AZ on the Navajo Nation.
This piece is a love letter to femininity and youthful hearts wandering Eastern cathedrals of forest and field. The sky patterning is traced from my great-grandmother’s handmade lace. She was Quebecoise, lived on a dairy farm and gave birth to 12 daughters.
“Come here my love and I will lift my spirits high for you
I’d like to fly away and spend a day or two
Just contemplating the fields and leaves and talking about nothing
Just layin’ down in shades of effervescent
And shades of time and tide and flowing through
Become enraptured by the sights and sounds in intrigue of nature’s beauty
Come along with me and take it all in, come here my love.”
